Californians Sour over Hyundai
Hyundai gives California car buyers the most sour treatment of any auto manufacturer, two consumer groups reported Tuesday. The California Public Interest Research Group and Consumers for Auto Reliability and Safety said Hyundai Motor America scored worst on a 'lemon index' of manufacturer-buyer disputes.
Hyundai owners were 185 times more likely than Saturn buyers to take the manufacturer to arbitration for failing to fix major problems, according to the survey. Hyundai sold 4,595 cars in California in 1996 and arbitrated 56 disputes with consumers, a ratio of 82 cars sold for every complaint. By contrast, top-scoring Saturn sold 15,180 cars for every arbitration case."
